Hear Prue explain the 'why' behind ScootScool
When we build roads in Australia, we try to do it in such a way that they keep people safe, even if someone makes a mistake. But, that's not what they're like now. Right now, speed limits are high, intersections are complex, and paths and crossings are missing.
When you walk, or ride a bike or scooter, you're often the smallest one out there. Some people won't see you; they'll go too fast or they'll open a door without looking. You'll also get stuff wrong. Your eyes will tell you there's time to cross when there isn't. You'll assume the path is clear when it's not. At times, it will feel like you're sharing a network with turkeys. The bottom line is, often it will be left to you to keep yourself safe when others fail.
As ScootScool you'll be aiming to stay 150% safe. The extra 50% is about making up for all the stuff that others do, stuff outside your control, outdated infrastructure and of course, the turkeys.
As young people transition from primary to secondary school, they become more independent in their travel, and more reliant on walking, riding bikes or scooters and using public transport.
ScootScool are industry experts in e-mobility and traffic engineering who have come together to train young people with survival skills for walking, riding or scooting in urban areas. Visiting schools, universities, TAFE's, workplaces, and indeed anywhere we're needed in order to educate and inform on everything from common law, to hazard detection and survival skills.
We talk about hazards around roads for walking, riding bikes, e-scooters and e-bikes. We provide insight around the most and least risky modes for young people and deliver an evidence based program to cover the core skills they need.
Our program covers a wide range of topics including traffic fundamentals, preparing for your first ride, taking care of others, safety equipment and purchasing advice.
